What was once the breakout sleeper hit horror movie of 2013, The Conjuring has now spawned more than a franchise: it is a shared universe, which Warner Bros. intends to build in a ever growing, expansive way. So it'd be best to think on your sins before preparing yourself for the next chapter in the sage, The Nun. As the latest spinoff from the James Wan series, The Nun will follow up on the devilish ghoul in a habit who was glimpsed in 2016's The Conjuring 2.
Previously set to be written by David Leslie, The Nun ultimately was written by Gary Dauberman, who is working from a story he penned with The Conjuring director James Wan. Dauberman is best known for writing the scripts for Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation. He also co-wrote this year's smash hit, It. Corin Hardy meanwhile will direct. This is Hardy's second film after 2015's The Hallow.

The Nun Release Date
The Nun will scare up audiences when it opens on September 7, 2018. That's the same weekend that It: Chaper One did so well in last year.
The Nun Story
The official synopsis for The Nun is appropriately ominous:
In 1952 at the Cârța Monastery in Romania, a nun, a priest and a novitiate investigate the mysterious death of a nun.
However, from reports related to casting, we can dig a little deeper. The film will be from the perspective of a young nun who has just joined the calling, Sister Irene (Taissa Farmiga) who helps in an investigation in post-war Romania led by a Father Burke (Demián Bichir). Burke has been assigned by the Vatican to travel to Romania in order to investigate the apparent suicide of a nun. Their investigation will point to something undoubtedly demonic.
Like the Annabelle movies before it, The Nun will technically be a prequel to The Conjuring films. In fact, it will be the earliest-set film in the continuity timeline with its 1952 backdrop. The film was also teased by a photograph in 2017's Annabelle: Creation. However, it appears WB is now viewing The Nun as a continuation of a shared universe, as opposed to merely another spinoff.
While promoting Annabelle: Creation in an interview with Cinema Blend, franchise producer Peter Safran said, "We have a board that we created that has what we hope will ultimately be our series of movies. We have it in chronological order, so we can keep track of where it all happens... At some point, you will be able to watch in order, The Nun, Annabelle 2, Annabelle 1, Conjuring, Conjuring 2, you know."
The Nun Cast
Intriguingly, the cast is being led by Taissa Farmiga as Sister Irene. Fans of horror might know her for her work on FX's American Horror Story. However, she is also the younger sister of Vera Farmiga, the star of The Conjuring films. So the prospect that Farmiga's young nun heroine might be related to the Warren family in The Conjuring films is an open question. The movie also stars The Hateful Eight's Demián Bichir. Bichir, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the 2011 drama A Better Life, will play Father Burke, a priest Rome assigns to investigate the mysterious death of a nun.

The Nun also features Game of Thrones' Charlotte Hope (she played Myranda, the lover of Ramsay Bolton) as Sister Victoria and Romanian actress Ingrid Bisu as Sister Oana. It also of course features Bonnie Aarons, who will reprise her role as Valek/the Demonic Nun from The Conjuring 2.
